Mugu Memorial Hospice Fund

Most of you know that I'm a retired veterinary technician who now does home care as a visiting nurse for pets. Most of the animals I'm called to care for are in end of life stages, so my role is to help them through their remaining days with dignity and comfort, as well as to be there as a comfort to their human companions and guide them through the end of life process with grace and compassion.

We lost a beauty of a cat last Friday. Her name was Mugu, an eighteen year old veteran who stole my heart with her will to live. She taught me a lot in the two months I nursed her, and my life is richer for having known her this short time.

Her "Mom" wanted to show her gratitude to me for the care I had given them both, so she started The Mugu Memorial Fund so that people with financial hardship could benefit from my care for their pets. I'm so completely touched by this gesture.

We're in the process of setting this up and trying to keep it simple. If any of you would like to donate, please contact me by email by clicking on the Magu Memorial link above.

I know Mugu is purring her approval. She was a classy cat.

This is a wonderful idea. I am sending you a check in memory of Simon, my pure black cat who had a disease they didn't figure out, and who was blind and died at less than a year old, and in memory of Lester, your niece's Siamese who died at 17.

Thanks, Pammy. How sweet! The check should be made out to me with "Mugu" written in the memo section so we can keep donations straight. In order to have opened a bank account under a memorial fund, we would have needed an attorney, etc. We really don't want it to get that complicated.

Oh my, this is so tender. Mugu looks very wise and comfortable in her own skin - so much to learn from these souls. You are so kind and it shows in so many ways. It's wonderful this hospice fund is coming to fruition.

Btw, thank you for the book recommendation. I will look into it (and pass the word on). It's a joy having met you and sharing so much even over cyberspace. I may be taking some time off from blogging so that I can stay focused on my portfolio and job search. I'll post when that happens.

Be well~

Thanks, GZ. Mugu's mom had such a wonderful, unselfish idea, didn't she? I'm hoping many will benefit from this.

I'll miss you in a HUGE way, but I know you need to do what you need to do and I'll honor that. Please stop by from time to time if you can. It's always nice to hear from you and to share inspiration ;)

Peace and love,
Laurel

Laurel, I want to thank you so very much for getting back to me so quickly and giving me your feedback. It's very helpful, as you know, to get fresh eyes to aid in seeing. I will keep you posted on my progress. I will pop by as you are an inspiration in my life.

Laurel, I couldn't used this when Lucy has such big medical bills. I always thought it was horrible that people can't pay their vet bills. Is that what it will be used for? What a wonderful, wonderful thing. Let me know what you need to spread the word.

oops, that was COULD have used this. :) We still owe $700 after already paying about $5000 already we didn't really have!

Ronni, it was initially set up to allow people to use my home nursing services who otherwise couldn't afford to. Right now I'm going to a house three times per day to express the bladder of a parylized dog. I also give him physical therapy while I'm there. I charge $25 per visit, so as you can see this adds up quickly.I try to give a price break where I can. If they were to load the dog in the car and drive him to the vet each time, I'm sure the costs would be more than double. Often times because of money constraints, people are forced with euthanasia. Also, I try to teach the clients how to do home care if they're willing. Most times they're given a 2 minute explanation upon discharge and then go home with their animal in a panic, not really knowing how to go about any of it. The local veterinarians refer me and I work closely with them as needed. Mostly though, they just tell me what the pet needs and I can handle it. It's really a much needed, wonderful service. I can't believe I'm the only retired vet-tech who has come up with it! I may start a nationwide chapter...who knows. I just don't want to be overwhelmed on a business level. I just want to help as many animals as I can.
Thanks for asking about it! If you want to put mugu Memorial link on your blog, that would be awesome :) XXXX Lolo

What goes around comes around. This is such a wonderful endeavour.

I just think of how we sometimes don't know what is happening to us when we are sick and I would bet that the animals feel the same way.

I could tell from looking at your beautiful eyes that you are kind and compassionate.

God bless you for this Laurel.

Love Renee
